Rebuilding self-worth when you've stopped believing in yourself

Somewhere along the way you started believing you're too much, or not enough, or both. You give and give, and still feel you haven't earned your place. Your self-worth was never truly gone. It has been buried under other people's words, and it can be uncovered again.

Does this feel familiar?

  • You second-guess every decision, because if you got it wrong before, how can you trust yourself now?
  • Someone pays you a compliment and you brush it off before it can land.
  • You put everyone else first and feel guilty the moment you do something for yourself.
  • A voice in your head says you're too much, not enough, or too broken to be loved.

Six steps to start rebuilding your self-worth today

  1. Write down the inner critic’s exact words. Not “I feel bad about myself”, but the actual sentence. “You always ruin things.” “Who do you think you are?” Seeing the words on paper puts a little distance between you and them.
  2. Ask, “Whose voice is this?” Read the sentence again. Does it sound like you, or like someone from your past? Sometimes the harshest things we tell ourselves were first said to us by someone else. You are allowed to stop repeating them.
  3. Collect evidence of small wins. At the end of each day, write down one thing you did well, however small. You made a difficult phone call. You were patient when it was hard. Over time, the list becomes proof your inner critic can’t argue with.
  4. Receive one compliment without deflecting it. Next time someone says something kind, don’t explain it away. Just say, “Thank you.” It may feel uncomfortable at first. That discomfort is a sign you are practising something new.
  5. Keep one small promise to yourself every day. Drink the glass of water. Take the ten-minute walk. Go to bed on time. Every promise you keep to yourself rebuilds trust in yourself, one day at a time.
  6. End the day with gratitude. Write down three things you are grateful for, including one thing about yourself. As I often say, “Gratitude is a magnet for miracles.” Where focus goes, energy flows, and gratitude gently turns your focus towards what is good, including what is good in you.

Why it can feel stuck even when you know you’re worth more

You may know, in your head, that you deserve better. You may have read the books and repeated the affirmations. And still, the moment something goes wrong, the old voice comes straight back.

That is because beliefs about your worth are rarely formed by logic, so logic alone rarely shifts them. They were often learned in moments of hurt, rejection or criticism, and they live beneath conscious thought. Repeating a kinder sentence on top doesn’t always reach where the old belief is held.

How I can help

I know this terrain personally. I have rebuilt my own life and my belief in myself after divorce, and long before that, after a spinal fracture at 15 that put me in a wheelchair. It was a long road back, and it shaped how deeply I believe in self-trust. I don’t teach anything I haven’t lived.

NLP coaching helps you notice the beliefs and inner language that keep you small, and practise choosing new ones. Timeline Therapy helps you let go of limiting beliefs and the old emotions attached to them, without reliving the past. BodyTalk works with what your body is still holding.

The aim is to help you remember who you were before the doubt moved in. Start with a free, private discovery call, and take the first small step back towards yourself.

Questions women often ask

What are limiting beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are the quiet rules you live by without questioning them, like "I always get it wrong" or "I don't deserve good things". They often form early or after painful experiences, and they shape your choices long after the original moment has passed.

Can self-worth really change?

Self-worth is not fixed. It is built from the beliefs you hold about yourself, and beliefs can be noticed, questioned and changed. It takes patience and the right support. I work with you at your own pace.

How is this different from positive thinking?

Positive thinking asks you to cover an old belief with a new sentence. If the old belief is still there underneath, the new sentence rarely sticks. My work looks for where the belief came from and helps you let go of it at that level.

Is it online too?

Yes. NLP coaching, Timeline Therapy and BodyTalk all work by video call, and I work with women in the UK, UAE, US and across South Africa this way. You can also come to the clinic in Durban if you prefer.
